An idol is anything we construct with the sole purpose of displaying or representing our own reputation, fame and renown. At best, all an idol can be is a weaker dead image of ourselves. Jeremiah asks, “The land is ruined and laid waste; why?” God answers, “Because man has not listened to and obeyed My voice but has rather gone about setting up the equivalent of scarecrows in cucumber fields.” What man has set up on his own does not have the power to nurture and cultivate what God has given us through His Power and Wisdom. But when we do serve our God with all of our hearts, giving Him Glory, we become an extension of His arm, mighty and powerful on the earth. Let him who glories Glory in the fact that he knows God and is known by God. It’s time to examine our hearts: what are we building, and why are we building it?
